At the December meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Brad Lauinger as Knight of the Month for December 2012 recognizing his efforts arranging the Council Family Christmas Party. Brad, as host for the council, made sure the 100 plus council family members had a great time, especially the youngsters who enjoyed having Santa visit the party and pass out gifts. During the evening, Brad also made time for everyone to focus on the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of the infant Jesus.

As Brad planned for the evening festivities, he insured there was a wide variety of food and treats by working with local business in the community as well as the Knight’s families who brought food to compliment the main course. Also, Brad arranged to have members of the St. Mary of Huntley Choir to lead the record number of attendees in singing Christmas Carols to get everyone in the Christmas Spirit.

At the October meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, the trustees selected Father Scott DuVall as Knight of the Month for October 2012, recognizing his efforts organizing the special Columbus Day Liturgy honoring the patron of the Knights of Columbus, Christopher Columbus and also celebrating the first gathering of Catholic men 132 years ago by the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, who at the time was the pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, to propose establishing a lay organization of Catholic men, known today as the Knights of Columbus.

Fr. DuVall was the celebrant of the Mass on Monday, October 8, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntley, which was attended by Knights of Columbus, their family members and parishioners. In the homily delivered at this Mass, Father DuVall recognized the many charitable works of the Knights, especially in support of seminarians studying for the priesthood.

Fr. DuVall was ordained a priest at St. Peter Cathedral in Rockford on May 16, 2009. Father DuVall studied at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Originally from Southeastern Illinois, Fr. Duvall is from a farm family. Prior to entering the seminary, Fr. DuVall worked in the banking industry. He is a certified Advocate for Victims of Domestic Violence and worked for the Department of Children and Family Services as a Child Advocate and was a licensed Intensive Care Foster Parent for the State of Illinois.

Father DuVall converted to Catholicism at the age of 30 and was a member of a Religious Order. He is trained in many forms of Liturgical Celebrations offered by the Church. He is trained in Sacred Music (specifically Gregorian Chant), the restoration of sacred vestments, and the restoration of sacred objects used in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. He is also a Third Degree member of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council.

At the September meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council # 11666, the trustees selected Don Moore and Gary Radaszewski as Knights of the Month for September 2012, recognizing their efforts coordinating the council’s 2012 Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities.

Members of the Knights of Columbus do a great deal to assist people with intellectual disabilities. The Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities is one of the most popular programs conducted by Knights of Columbus state and local councils. The campaign is a fund raiser in which councils collect donations outside stores and on street corners, usually in the fall of each year. According to Don Moore, “The generosity and enthusiasm of those making donations was remarkable considering the current financial challenges everyone faces as a result of our nation’s economy.”

At the August meeting of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666, Fr. Jonathan Bakkelund, Parochial Vicar at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntley, was selected as August Knight of the Month, recognizing his efforts planning the Annual Clergy Play Day Golf Outing held in July at Marengo Ridge Golf Club. Fr. Bakkelund took the lead organizing the event. Understand the huge amount of work necessary to organize a golf outing of this magnitude, the Knights wanted to recognize him for all his work. He was helped in the planning by Fr. Jeremy Trowbridge, Parochial Vicar from St. Peter Cathedral in Rockford.

Coming from Machesney Park, Illinois, he graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 2006 with a degree in Theology and Philosophy. Upon completion of undergraduate studies, Bishop Doran asked him to study at the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. He completed studies for a Bachelor of Sacred Theology Degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in June of 2009. Fr. Bakkelund served as a deacon during a pastoral year at St. Thomas the Apostle, Crystal Lake, from 2009-2010. He returned to Rome for his final year of studies in the fall of 2010 and completed a Master’s of Divinity in Dogmatics from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on May 21, 2011.

Fr. Bakkelund joined the Knights of Columbus in 2002 and is currently a First Degree member of the St. Mary of Huntley Knights of Columbus Council #11666.
